BOARD OF ALDERMEN

The Board of Aldermen of the Town of Anderson met in regular open session in the American Legion Building in Anderson, Texas, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2004, with the following members present: Mayor Gail Sowell, F.D. Calhoun, David Heyman, City Attorney Lovett Boggess, Tom Johanson, newly declared Alderwoman Erna Freeman, and with Alderman Bill Robinett absent.

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 P.M.; shortly thereafter Alderman Bill Robinett arrived.

An order dated April 8, 2004 cancelled the scheduled election of May 15, 2004 inasmuch as all candidates were un-opposed. City Attorney Lovett Boggess administered the Oath of Office to each of the newly elected officials. The officials signed Oaths required by law.

The Aldermen re-organized into a “committee of the whole” to elect one of its members Mayor Pro-Tem and one Secretary.

Alderwoman Erna Freeman made a motion that Alderman F.D. Calhoun be re-elected to the position of Mayor Pro-Tem. Tom Johanson seconded the motion and Alderman Calhoun was elected unanimously.

Alderman Tom Johanson made a motion that David Heyman be re-elected to the position of Secretary. Alderwoman Erna Freeman seconded the motion; David Heyman was elected by a unanimous vote.

Mayor Sowell asked that minutes from the regular meeting held on April 8, 2004 be considered/approved. Alderman Tom Johanson made a motion that the minutes be accepted as presented; Alderman F.D. Calhoun seconded the approval motion, which was approved by all members present.

Ms. Ava Cunningham, who planned to introduce the 2-1-1 program to the city, was unable to be present. She will be re-scheduled.

Mr. Steve Duncan of Pledger Kalkomey, Inc. was scheduled to present an update to the council on the Wastewater Renewal Permit as well as the school district’s plan for the lift station. He was unable to attend and will be re-scheduled.

Visitors on the agenda present at this meeting included Hope Bay Moriarty and Janeth Neville who presented a request for immediate assistance with the drainage on Fanthorp St. north of FM 1774. The problems were discussed in detail and Ms Neville presented photographs of some of the damage to her home. Former Mayor John Freeman and Chester Finke (who lives in town and works for the county) commented on the volume of work required to solve the problem there, as well as other areas throughout the town. Mayor Sowell indicated her intention to meet with the new County Engineer regarding these problems, as well as seek other professional advice.

Alderman David Heyman made a motion that all invoices and accounts currently due and payable be ordered paid. Alderman F. D. Calhoun seconded the motion. The motion was passed unanimously.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
